The name Fortaleza means fortress. The first building erected in what is now called Fortaleza, was the Fortress Schoonenborch, built in 1649 by the Dutch, who at the time had invaded and were occupying cities in the Brazilian northeast, such as Recife and Natal. After the Dutch were expelled, the city changed its name a few times, finally opting to settle for the name Fortaleza. With over 2 million residents, Fortaleza is a large city with a very fun-loving convivial atmosphere. It is also the capital of the Ceara state and is sometimes called Ceará. Two words define the capital of Ceara State: fun and party. Party is the permanent state of spirit of the people and the city. Sun is absolute on its 25km of beaches, as Fortaleza is the Brazilian coastal city with the greatest number of sunshine days per year.
